The San Antonio Spurs have equalized the Western Conference Finals after a commanding victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder, 103-82, on Sunday night. With both teams clinching two wins each, Game 5 at Paycor Center in Oklahoma City on Tuesday night becomes crucial in determining who will gain an advantage heading into Game 6.
Thunder’s Decline in 3-Point Shooting
A key aspect of this matchup was the Thunder’s waning performance in 3-point shooting. They had a strong showing in Game 3, shooting 44.7% from beyond the arc and 48.1% from the field overall. However, the Spurs improved their defense significantly in Game 4, limiting the Thunder to just 6 of 33 from 3-point range, marking a low 18%. Their overall field goal percentage dwindled to 33%.
While San Antonio struggled in 3-point shooting too, making 27% of their attempts, they excelled in gaining free throw opportunities. They shot 32 free throws, contrasting Oklahoma City’s mere 18 attempts.
Game Progression
Both teams showed aggression, but San Antonio capitalized better. The Spurs led by nine points at the end of the first quarter and expanded this lead into double digits by halftime. The Thunder’s struggles persisted as turnovers began to pile up, which the Spurs exploited, scoring 25 points off the Thunder’s 20 turnovers and succeeding in fast-break opportunities.
At one stage, the Spurs extended their lead to 25 points, allowing them to rest starters during the fourth quarter with the victory secured.
Individual Performances
Victor Wembanyama shined, leading the Spurs with 33 points, making 11 of 22 field goals, including three 3-pointers. He added eight rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Stephon Castle contributed with 13 points, three rebounds, and six assists, alongside efforts from Devin Vassell and De’Aaron Fox. The Spurs’ bench also added valuable points, with Dylan Harper scoring seven points and collecting five rebounds.
For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander faced a tough shooting night, hitting six of 15 shots but converting all seven free throws. He tallied four rebounds, seven assists, and four turnovers. The Thunder’s bench struggled to replicate their Game 3 success, with Aaron Wiggins and Jared McCain combining for a poor 3 of 21 shooting, totaling eight points.
The series continues Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. ET.
