Freshman catcher Diego Bastidas has quickly made an impact in high school baseball, capturing the attention of the Metea Valley coach, Steve Colombe. Bastidas follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Daniel, who played for the Mustangs before transferring to Middle Tennessee State. Bastidas started on the frosh/soph team, showing versatility as a catcher, infielder, and pitcher.
Recently, Bastidas seized his opportunity at the varsity level. His first chance came against Waubonsie, where he hit an RBI triple. He continued to impress during his playoff debut against Neuqua Valley. Batting from the No. 9 spot, Bastidas went 2-for-4, with two RBIs and a run scored, contributing significantly to Metea Valley’s 9-5 victory in the Class 4A Plainfield North Regional quarterfinal.
Metea Valley, seeded 17th, upset 16th-seeded Neuqua Valley. The Mustangs now face top-seeded Lockport in a regional semifinal. Colombe praised the team’s performance at a crucial moment. Bastidas showcased his defensive skills, executing key plays that turned the game. With runners on first and second, Bastidas picked off a player at second and threw out another attempting to steal.
Bastidas’ awareness and defensive prowess stood out in the game. He caught the opposing players off-guard, making decisive plays that changed the dynamics. Colombe acknowledged these plays as potentially decisive. Offensively, Bastidas contributed with a hustling double, driving in two runs to restore the lead. His defense and hitting have both been commended.
Team members appreciate Bastidas’ presence. Tyler Gluting, known for his powerful hitting, praised Bastidas’ abilities both behind the plate and as a hitter. Bastidas stands out even as a freshman, comfortably facing older players. The game continued with both teams scoring twice in the fifth. Bastidas then added to Metea Valley’s lead with a double in the sixth inning.
Bastidas prioritizes his defense but strives to improve his hitting. He looks up to professionals like Salvador Perez and Yadier Molina, as well as his brother. Bastidas aims to lead despite being one of the youngest on the team, supported by seniors. His leadership and vocal presence help guide the team.
Observers liken Bastidas to Shane Torres, another freshman who advanced to varsity early. Colombe views Bastidas’ potential as vast, emphasizing the importance of maturity and experience. Bastidas anticipates another playoff opportunity against Lockport, motivated by the win against Neuqua Valley. The team remains optimistic, aiming to extend their success.
