The talent of Mason Netcel from St. Charles North has always been evident. A standout since being called up to varsity in his freshman year, Netcel committed to Division I Indiana State last September, proving his skill level. Despite his athletic aptitude, Netcel faced challenges when things didn’t go his way. Grasping a better mindset this season has unleashed an elevated level in his game.
Netcel expressed satisfaction with the mental side of his game over statistics. He stated, “My main goal this year was to be more positive and not let things get to me as much.” While maintaining positivity has been difficult at times, Netcel is proud of his progress. Discussions around mental aspects in sports have become more common, and for Netcel, it has been transformative. He shared, “As a kid, striking out would infuriate me. Learning to manage that over the years and not carry it onto the field is significant.”
Coach Todd Genke from North Stars commends Netcel’s growth. “He’s matured substantially,” Genke remarked. “His leadership role demanded maturity, and he has risen to it. Often, he is the most talented player on the field. His ability to better handle adversity reflects his growth.” Genke, a former minor league pitcher, understands the pressures Netcel faced. With high expectations linked to being Division I talent, the weight can be significant. “Growing up with such talent can be challenging,” Genke said. “Expectations can feel burdensome, but Mason’s maturity has been notable.”
Netcel’s performance has been impressive in his final season for St. Charles North, boasting a .320 batting average with 31 runs, 13 doubles, 5 homers, and 19 RBIs. His .492 on-base percentage stands out, enriched by 22 walks and hit-by-pitch instances 11 times. His work ethic is praised, with Genke noting that talent combined with drive and dedication leads to remarkable achievements. “He’s a great teammate,” remarked Genke.
Despite limited offers from colleges, including Indiana State and a junior college in Wisconsin, Netcel remained optimistic. Initially, the lack of offers was discouraging. “The first year was tough. I didn’t have any offers, and seeing peers get Big Ten school offers was hard,” Netcel admitted. However, after showcasing skills at Indiana State’s camp, he secured an offer he cherished. “I felt I fit in well there and wanted to be part of their team,” he affirmed.
Moving toward the postseason, Netcel is optimistic. “We have a positive vibe heading into the playoffs. I believe we can have a successful run.” Netcel’s journey highlights the importance of mental resilience along with athletic skill, showing a promising future as he moves on to Indiana State.
