Daniel Suarez achieved a memorable victory in the Coca-Cola 600, becoming the first Mexican-born driver to win the race. Suarez secured his third Cup Series win and his first since 2024 through strategic pit calls and timely weather intervention.
Suarez’s connection to the late Kyle Busch added emotional significance to his triumph. As a past driver for Kyle Busch Motorsports, Suarez dedicated his win to Busch and his family. The race took place just days after Busch’s passing.
“Kyle, he was special,” Suarez said tearfully. “I was doing this for Kyle, for (his wife) Samantha, for (his children) Brexton and Lennix, and for all of his family.”
Suarez’s win came after he took a gamble by choosing a two-tire strategy during a late pit stop. He then managed to hold off competitors Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin before rain cut the race short with 27 laps remaining.
Bell, who finished second, expressed his disappointment, noting that it wasn’t meant to be their day. Meanwhile, Hamlin, who finished third, mentioned they were “a little unlucky,” as they both failed to overtake Suarez in critical moments.
The event took place against the backdrop of mourning for Kyle Busch. His death from pneumonia-related complications sent shocks through the motorsport world. NASCAR and the host track paid tribute with various gestures, including showcasing his No. 8 car and decals on every participating vehicle.
In a race marked by collisions, Ross Chastain and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. crashed with 81 laps remaining. Chase Elliott was another casualty, finishing 37th after a crash on Lap 90.
Austin Hill, stepping in for the deceased Busch, finished 26th, driving a No. 33 car as a mark of respect. Richard Childress Racing, honoring Busch, retired his No. 8 car temporarily.
