President Donald Trump’s late-night negotiations for a peace and denuclearization deal with Iran drew criticism from both supporters and detractors within the Republican party. While Trump worked on the agreement, some of his advisers criticized figures like Mike Pompeo and Ted Cruz.
Inner Circle Criticism
Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, openly criticized former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In a heated online post, Cheung suggested Pompeo was uninformed about the current negotiations and questioned his comments on the potential deal with Iran.
Pompeo’s concerns centered on the belief that the upcoming deal might mirror past policies from the Obama era, which aimed at easing tensions with Iran. He expressed worry that such a deal could enable Iran to further develop nuclear weapons and military capabilities. Pompeo compared the potential agreement to strategies promoted by previous officials, implying it was not aligned with ‘America First’ values.
In response to Pompeo’s assertions, Sebastian Gorka, a former adviser, warned that if Pompeo had any secret information on the negotiations, it would have been obtained illegally.
Political Reactions
Senator Marco Rubio defended the Trump administration, stating that any deal would not leave Iran in a stronger position concerning its nuclear ambitions. He highlighted the administration’s preference for diplomatic resolutions.
Ted Cruz also expressed concern over the negotiations, arguing that releasing funds to Iran could undermine U.S. efforts in the region. He compared the situation to the Obama-era approach, suggesting it might not align with strong American foreign policy.
These statements led to a back-and-forth exchange between Cruz and outside political advisor Alex Bruesewitz. Cruz stood firm in his critique, while Bruesewitz defended Trump’s strategy.
Calls for Negotiation
Senator Rand Paul weighed in by advocating for giving Trump’s administration room to negotiate effectively. He mentioned that lasting peace often involves discussions and compromises.
The debate highlights the divisions within the political landscape on how to engage with Iran. Both supportive and critical viewpoints reflect varying expectations of Trump’s diplomatic efforts.
