President Donald Trump continues to exert significant influence on Republican politics, according to Sen. John Kennedy, R-La. This assertion comes as Trump’s endorsement played a pivotal role in reshaping a Louisiana Senate race, leading to the defeat of incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy.
Kennedy, speaking on ‘The Sunday Briefing,’ stated, ‘Unless you’re God’s perfect idiot, the result was predictable.’ Polls had consistently indicated that Cassidy faced challenges. Trump’s endorsement of Congresswoman Julia Letlow was impactful, and although Bill Cassidy understood this, he chose to participate in the race, a decision Kennedy respects.
During the GOP primary, Letlow secured approximately 45% of the vote, followed by Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming at around 28%, while Cassidy ended in third place with just under 25%, as reported by The Associated Press.
Letlow, representing the state’s fifth district since 2021, will advance to a runoff against Fleming since no candidate achieved 50% of the vote. The winner will subsequently face the Democratic runoff victor in November.
Cassidy faced criticism from Trump, who has labeled him as disloyal and detrimental to Louisiana following Cassidy’s vote to convict Trump during the impeachment trial years ago. Trump took to social media after Cassidy’s defeat, declaring the senator’s political career finished.
In his concession speech, Cassidy remarked, ‘When you participate in democracy, sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to, but you don’t pout, you don’t whine. You don’t claim the election was stolen… You don’t manufacture some excuse.’ He expressed gratitude to voters for the opportunity to represent them.
Though Trump’s support for Letlow is cited as a reason for her strong performance, Kennedy pointed to another voter sentiment. Some Louisiana voters were displeased with changes in primary election formats, which restricted their choices. The legislature shifted from open to closed primaries, causing voter confusion as people had to select between primaries.
Kennedy concluded that Trump’s endorsement was significant, yet Cassidy faced challenges for over a year, and the election outcome wasn’t surprising, especially after Trump joined the discourse.
