During a performance in Prague, Czech Republic, Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers unexpectedly ran off stage when a laser was directed at him. Recently, Nick has shared insights into his personal struggles, discussing how his faith was tested due to events early in his career, including feeling betrayed by his church and his family losing their home.
Nick, 33, and his brothers Kevin, 38, and Joe, 36, started their music journey in the early 2000s when their father, Kevin Jonas Sr., served as the senior pastor at Wyckoff Assembly of God Church in New Jersey. As the Jonas Brothers band formed and signed with Columbia Records in 2005, their father was pressured to leave his role at the church, which also resulted in the family having to leave their church-owned home.
In a conversation on the “Jay Shetty Podcast,” Nick reflected on how the church’s circumstances became a pivotal moment for him and his family. He explained, “Our dad was at that church for 10 years. It was a real safety net for us and a place where we felt a part of a community.” However, some church members, unhappy with his father, sought to have him removed, which led to him losing his position just as the family was investing in the brothers’ musical aspirations.
The family moved to a modest home in Little Falls, New Jersey, provided rent-free during their transition period. As the Jonas Brothers toured high schools in New Jersey, Nick started experiencing health issues, including weight loss and constant thirst, which led to his Type 1 diabetes diagnosis. This period was challenging as their debut album “It’s About Time” didn’t perform well, and Columbia Records terminated their contract, placing enormous financial stress on the family.
“We got dropped after our first album came out and we were hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt,” Nick revealed. This financial strain, coupled with the emotional turmoil of leaving their church, led Nick to doubt his faith.
Despite these challenges, the Jonas Brothers’ luck shifted when Hollywood Records, under the Disney umbrella, offered them a new record deal in 2007, which resulted in significant success and exposure through the Disney Channel.
Nick Jonas has since been candid about how these experiences impacted his faith journey. Although he questioned organized religion, his belief in God remained strong. He stated, “My relationship with my God is totally intact and that my belief is totally intact.” Nick views this journey of faith as essential, encouraging others to embark on their own explorations of self-discovery.
