Polymarket, a prediction market platform, halted trading on its international platform for about an hour on Thursday. This action followed a security breach involving a third-party software vendor. Users in the official Polymarket Discord channel began to worry when reports surfaced at 1:30 p.m. indicating some wallets were being drained of their funds.
In response, Polymarket assured users it would compensate anyone affected by the breach. The platform, which separately operates a U.S. market, lets users place bets on outcomes ranging from political events to video game releases.
At 2 p.m., Polymarket entered a cancel-only mode. This mode allowed users to cancel existing transactions but prevented new trade orders. The issue was traced back to DebugBear, a third-party platform for performance and debugging. Polymarket has since reported the incident to authorities in the United Kingdom, where DebugBear is based.
DebugBear acknowledged the ongoing security incident on social media and advised users to remove their embedded web-monitoring tools from websites. The situation is being closely monitored.
