Sparrow Coffee Brings a New Brew to Clarendon Hills

2 hours ago 0

The excitement began three years ago when plans emerged for Sparrow Coffee to take over the former Starbucks spot in downtown Clarendon Hills. Chris Chacko founded Sparrow Coffee in 2012, offering custom roasts to upscale and Michelin-starred restaurants before opening his first café in Naperville in January 2018.

On Wednesday, Oct. 21, the new Clarendon Hills location at 100 Park Ave. opened its doors. Chacko noted that the decision process started in 2023 when he heard about Starbucks’ closure. ‘My family resides here, and we have felt the community’s warmth and kindness,’ he said. ‘We aimed to bring a top-notch coffee shop with outstanding food, showing this community the respect it deserved.’

Chacko holds a firm belief that introducing exceptional products at fair prices leads to success. ‘People will taste the difference and tell their family and friends to visit,’ he stated. ‘We hope to attract individuals from neighboring areas, boosting the performance of other local businesses.’

Chacko instructed his architect to design a space accommodating high volumes while offering diverse seating, emphasizing areas where families can converse. Initial hours for Sparrow are 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., but Chacko aims to extend to 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. based on community demand.

In the coming weeks, Sparrow will broaden its menu, including more coffee varieties, non-alcoholic drinks, lunch options, and occasional items from renowned chef friends.

The journey from the initial discussions to its grand opening at 100 S. Park Ave. was lengthy. Sparrow not only occupies the former Starbucks site but also spaces previously home to Little Creperie and State Farm Insurance.

Karen Deane, a Clarendon Hills resident, expressed satisfaction with Sparrow’s opening. ‘I looked forward to it, missing a local meeting spot. I prefer home-brewed coffee, but a communal place was needed, and Sparrow fits well.’

She appreciates the expanded seating compared to Starbucks. ‘It feels modern and comfortable,’ Deane added. ‘Judging by the crowds, it’s poised for success.’

Another local, Kristie Wester, shared her enthusiasm. ‘Finally open! The wait was worthwhile,’ she said. ‘The coffee tasted excellent. My husband enjoyed his breakfast sandwiches. The venue is impressive and beneficial for downtown and our community.’

Village President Eric Tech voiced optimism about Sparrow becoming the premier coffee destination in the area, renowned throughout the Midwest. ‘Choosing Clarendon Hills is positive for our town, serving residents and attracting visitors. Their investment shows commitment to our future,’ he remarked.
