With less than a week remaining in the most expensive midterms, significant pressure mounts for the enormous spending to deliver results. Over $11 billion has been funneled into races nationwide, setting new records as Republicans aim to preserve their House and Senate majorities amidst a national map favoring Democrats. Ad spending in battleground Senate races, particularly in Ohio and Texas, has exceeded $500 million in each, according to AdImpact. Democrats are pressing Republicans in traditionally red regions, aiming for a blue wave in the House.
Eight races from this midterm cycle have entered the top ten most costly on record, according to AdImpact. Gubernatorial race ad spending reached an all-time high of $2.4 billion, increasing by more than half a billion from the 2022 midterms. Tech mogul Elon Musk, along with influential super PACs—including crypto groups and AIPAC—are pouring funds into races to sway outcomes in the final days.
Record Breaking Midterm Cycle
The 2025-26 cycle surpassed previous midterms and presidential cycles, becoming the costliest ever. Data from AdImpact indicates $11.21 billion has been spent on ads as of Monday, slightly overtaking the $11.2 billion from the 2023-24 presidential cycle. This colossal figure derives from record high spending on House, Senate, and governor’s races, alongside substantial funds for down ballot and state Legislative contests.
Approximately $2.3 billion has been allocated to House races, reflecting Democrats’ optimism about gaining the lower chamber majority. Gubernatorial race spending surged to $2.6 billion, up from $1.9 billion in 2022. Spending on Senate races climbed to $3.2 billion, rivaling the $3.2 billion spent on presidential campaigns in 2024.
Republican Spending Surge
According to recent Federal Election Commission filings, President Trump’s MAGA Inc. super PAC has expended $277 million over the last six weeks. The Republican National Committee infused $44 million into its House and Senate campaign sectors between mid-August and mid-October.
Decision Desk HQ’s forecast suggests Democrats have an 80% chance of winning the House and a near 60% probability of flipping the Senate. Competition remains fierce in Texas and Ohio Senate races, with significant financial resources committed by both parties.
Unprecedented Senate Race Expenses
In Texas, Democrat James Talarico amassed $64 million in the third quarter, while Republican Ken Paxton raised $18 million during the same period. Musk’s $158 million contribution to a pro-Paxton super PAC sparked controversy, with claims of attempting to “buy” a U.S. senator.
In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown raised $23.1 million against Republican Sen. Jon Husted’s $5 million in the third quarter. Over $113.5 million has been spent attacking Brown, as per the Ohio Capital Journal.
Elon Musk’s Political Investment
Musk’s involvement in the midterms sees him spending over $442 million, surpassing his $290 million expenditure during the 2024 elections. Despite his previous intent to disengage from political spending, Musk remains a prominent figure in funding efforts to support Republican candidates.
Cryptocurrency Influence
Cryptocurrency emerged as a significant contributor, spending approximately $176 million across over a hundred races, aiming to secure legislative allies. Fairshake, a leading crypto PAC, funded various candidates from both parties, including $1 million each on six representatives.
Top-10 Costly House Races
Democrats’ determination to reclaim control of the House has led to exorbitant spending. Eight House general elections from this midterm cycle now rank among the 10 most expensive ever.
The race for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District is the priciest, with $30 million spent by Democrats compared to $23 million by Republicans. Other high-spending contests include races in New York, Michigan, Texas, Wisconsin, and Colorado.
Voters will soon decide whether these costly campaigns were effective.
