John Harbaugh credited his players for Sunday’s overtime win against the Houston Texans. The New York Giants coach singled out quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Cam Skattebo, along with expressing gratitude to God.
“First, I want to humbly say I’m personally grateful to my Lord, High Rock, Protector and Stronghold, the Lord God in heaven,” Harbaugh stated at the start of his news conference. “And our guys, man, that was a player’s win.”
The Giants aim to succeed this season with young talents, including unexpected key players like McCarthy instead of Jaxson Dart, and Skattebo, who had to emerge from the coaching staff’s doghouse. During the first half of the game, Skattebo leaped over a Texans safety and received a flag for unnecessary roughness due to his aggressive play. McCarthy and Skattebo excelled in helping the Giants secure the victory.
Skattebo achieved a career-high 124 rushing yards and made a crucial overtime run that set up the winning points. Remarkably, his forceful running led to a penalty for burying a potential tackler. Despite being benched the previous week, Harbaugh praised Skattebo’s impressive performance, highlighting his “fierce joy.” Skattebo’s game included a 16-yard touchdown run and a 42-yard overtime dash, pushing the Giants to the Houston 28 yard line. Although a field goal could have sealed the victory, Devin Singletary’s subsequent touchdown assured the win.
McCarthy was named the starting quarterback after Jameis Winston replaced the injured Dart. McCarthy joined the Giants 27 days earlier in a trade from the Minnesota Vikings. His efficiency stood out as he completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards without turnovers.
“He played a heck of a football game. He deserves a lot of credit.” – John Harbaugh
The victory demonstrated the team’s resilience and potential to remain competitive in the NFC East, even without Dart. Harbaugh remarked, “It tells you who they are. I thought before the game we’re going to find out about our guys.” The Giants, now the only team in the NFC East with a winning record, aim to stay contenders throughout the season.
“We’re going to be in it until the end now,” Harbaugh asserted.
