Travis Brown, a standout on West Aurora’s basketball team, has stepped onto the football field for his senior year, adding a new layer to his athletic career. Despite his mother’s initial concerns about the dangers of football, Brown’s persistence paid off, supported by assistant coach Kyle Phelps, who helped persuade her to allow him to play.
Brown’s debut football season has brought unforgettable moments, including a pivotal 68-yard touchdown catch that secured a 40-21 win over Leyden in a Class 8A playoff opener. His performance included four receptions for 111 yards, a significant jump from his previous game stats. This achievement advanced the Blackhawks, with a 7-3 record, to face St. Ignatius in the next round.
Reflecting on the shift from basketball, where he thrived as a team leader, Brown embraced his new role on the football team. He emphasized playing his part by catching the ball, advancing upfield, and blocking when necessary. The touchdown was made possible by a crucial block from senior running back Ashtyn Sharkey, underscoring the team’s collective effort.
Senior quarterback Tyler Fecht praised Brown’s athleticism, noting that the team had not utilized him extensively before. However, his potential was evident in this game, showcasing his ability to impact the field when given opportunities.
Brown isn’t only succeeding in football; his basketball skills have earned him a scholarship offer from NCAA Division II Winona State. His versatility across sports sets a high bar for his future performances.
Besides Brown, Fecht also delivered an impressive game, completing 9 of 13 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. One pass to Richard Bell Jr. covered 35 yards on a strategic route. Bell, another basketball crossover, contributed significantly in the fourth quarter with three catches and a successful two-point conversion.
West Aurora faced challenges due to injuries, leading to a collaboration among running backs, with Keyeldrick Woods Jr. making notable contributions with 81 yards and a touchdown.
The Blackhawks, leading 13-7 at halftime, overcame a third-quarter slump to rally in the final quarter. Coach Eimer highlighted the performances of Bell and Fecht as game-changers who executed strategic plays, including a decisive double move leading to a touchdown.
Brown’s continued development in football has been a highlight for Coach Eimer, who praised his rapid improvement over the season. The coach speculated on the potential impact if Brown had dedicated more years to football, recognizing his natural talent and coachability.
The game’s pivotal moments included Brown’s touchdown, marking a crucial response to Leyden’s challenge. As the playoffs extend opportunities for young athletes, Eimer supports the expanded system, noting its value in fostering competition and growth.
