For the first time since 1982, the Milwaukee Brewers have triumphed in a World Series game. The Brewers clinched Game 1 of the Fall Classic against the Tampa Bay Rays with a narrow 3-2 victory.
Trailing by two runs, the Rays managed to load the bases with only one out in the ninth inning. Liam Hicks grounded into what was initially called a game-ending double play. However, replays revealed that shortstop Cooper Pratt had left second base prematurely, adjusting the score to 3-2. This left runners on second and third with two outs.
The Brewers had already launched their fireworks, filling the air with fog, when Johnny DeLuca came to bat and struck out to conclude the game.
Milwaukee had waited 46 years for another chance at the Fall Classic. The Brewers started strong with an RBI triple from Christian Yelich and a single from William Contreras, giving them a 2-0 lead in the first inning. But there weren’t more runs for a while, as Nick Martinez held the Brewers to two runs over five innings.
Milwaukee’s pitching was on point as well. Upcoming Cy Young Award winner Jacob Misiorowski limited the Rays to one run in his five innings, aided by some baserunning errors from Tampa Bay. In the first inning, with runners on first and second, Junior Caminero lined out, and Jonathan Aranda was doubled off second base, ending the rally. In the fifth inning, Victor Mesa Jr. was caught stealing third, cutting another chance short.
The Brewers also made a blunder when David Hamilton was the first out at third, attempting to stretch a double into a triple. However, Milwaukee capitalized on some small ball plays later. In the seventh inning, Hamilton executed a productive out to move a runner to scoring position. Jackson Chourio then drove in the insurance run with an opposite-field single, making the score 3-1. Milwaukee led the regular season in opposite-field hits and ground balls.
The Brewers will start Logan Henderson on the mound for Saturday night’s game, while the Rays will counter with Drew Rasmussen.
