Police and federal authorities are actively investigating a fatal shooting that occurred near a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday. The incident has resulted in one confirmed death.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Columbus shared via a post that their agents were responding to reports of a shooting. The incident was initially thought to have taken place at the mosque, located in the 2200 block of Albert Avenue.

The Alrahma Mosque is situated on Albert Avenue. However, police clarified that the shooting wasn’t an attack on the mosque but occurred at a nearby apartment complex around 2:10 p.m. local time.

An ATF spokesperson mentioned that the investigation is at an early stage. They noted that preliminary information indicated that shots were fired by unknown assailants as attendees were leaving a funeral service at the mosque located at 2226 Albert Avenue.

Reports from the Columbus Dispatch and witnesses, including a photographer at the scene, stated that the shooting happened during a funeral at the mosque. As the community in the street was affected, local TV footage showed police attempting to manage the gathering, which included instances of disputes and shoving.

“One individual has been confirmed deceased,” the ATF spokesperson conveyed. They also addressed earlier rumors about a second victim, stating those reports remain unverified. The investigation is ongoing, with ATF special agents collaborating with the Columbus Division of Police.

The Columbus Division of Police provided further details, explaining that the incident occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex adjacent to the mosque. “Information initially suggested that this may have occurred at a mosque. Our ongoing investigation will further examine the specifics,” stated the police spokesperson, emphasizing that the mosque was not targeted.

The FBI has extended resources to aid the investigation but deferred further inquiries to the Columbus police department. Newsweek has reached out to both the Alrahma Mosque and the Ohio Department of Public Safety for comments.
