Cam Skattebo’s Role Diminished Amid Locker Room Issues

44 minutes ago 0

New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo explained his absence from the game against the New Orleans Saints as a consequence of a previous fumble. This incident occurred at the end of the match against the Washington Commanders.

Skattebo remarked, “I got punished for what I did last week, and I understand, so I got to be ready when coach calls my name — and that wasn’t today.” Despite not anticipating zero carries, he was prepared for a reduced playing time. He added, “His message is to keep your head down and keep going. They understand the type of player I am, and I’ve just got to continue to do my job and do it to the best of my ability.”

Tiki Barber, a former Giants Pro Bowl running back, shared a different perspective. On the WFAN Giants postgame show, Barber claimed Skattebo’s limited role was due to unresolved issues within the locker room. “There have been a lot of negative plays for him,” Barber noted, highlighting problems such as misreading the run game and failing to perform critical tasks like protection responsibilities. According to Barber, these errors might not be obvious to fans, but they are significant for the team’s performance.

The Giants recently released former Pro Bowler Najee Harris, and Tyrone Tracy Jr. has displayed potential but has yet to demonstrate consistent performance. This leaves a gap for a reliable lead running back in the team.

Although Skattebo remains the strongest running back for the Giants, he faces challenges due to both on-field and off-field issues this season. If Barber’s insights hold any truth, it would benefit Skattebo to focus on retaining the ball and proving to head coach John Harbaugh he has evolved since the start of the season.
