The New York Giants continue their quest for a dependable running back as they decide on an unexpected roster change. Just days after airing grievances about the game strategy, Najee Harris has been released from the team. His departure follows a disappointing four-carry, two-yard effort.
Najee Harris joined the Giants during training camp when Tyrone Tracy showed early difficulties. He was given a starting opportunity when Cam Skattebo faced benching after a fumble that proved costly in the previous week. In a notably brief game appearance, Skattebo only participated in six plays without touching the ball.
Despite the team’s use of a running back trio comprising Harris, Tracy, and Devin Singletary, leading rushers were quarterback JJ McCarthy and wide receiver Darnell Mooney, managing 26 and 20 yards respectively. According to coach John Harbaugh, “Nobody’s really taken the bull by the horns.”
It’s tough to find rhythm with just a few plays,” Harris remarked through the New York Daily News. “For a running back, understanding how to attack the defense needs continuity.
Najee Harris expressed frustration with the lack of touches, stating that insufficient playtime disrupts the opportunity to gauge defensive tactics effectively. He recalled his past consistent performances with four 1,000-yard seasons as a Pittsburgh Steeler. However, he modestly gained 99 yards on 31 carries (averaging 3.2 yards per carry) since becoming a Giant.
The Giants’ challenge is evident, with the team’s running backs averaging only 3.4 yards per carry this season. Skattebo leads slightly with a 3.6 per-carry average but experienced fluctuating performances, exemplified by an 81-yard game against the Dallas Cowboys, followed by a varied set of results in subsequent weeks.
As the team faces the surging Houston Texans, John Harbaugh remains eager to see a player assert dominance in the running game. It’s clear that the Giants will be looking to fill Harris’s shoes with a candidate who can capitalize on opportunities in the upcoming matches.
