An elderly man in Mississippi was fatally shot during a home invasion, according to authorities. The incident occurred when an intruder allegedly entered Bobby McGill’s residence.
Incident Details
Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards shared that the intruder, Eric Basco, broke into the home around 4 a.m. McGill, 81, woke up and struggled with Basco. During the confrontation, Basco took McGill’s gun and shot him multiple times.
McGill’s wife, Peggy, managed to escape. After leaving the premises safely, she called 911 to report the attack.
“It appears that there was a struggle between the assailant and the homeowner,” Edwards explained. “The homeowner had a pistol near his bed.”
Suspect’s Background and Motive
Sheriff Edwards suggested that burglary might have been Basco’s motive. However, after the incident, Basco fatally shot himself in a bathroom. He succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
Before the invasion, a video captured Basco yelling and gesturing erratically about 1.5 miles from the McGill residence. He reportedly shouted phrases that sounded like “God is dead.” This has raised questions about his state of mind earlier that day.
Sheriff Edwards noted Basco had no significant criminal record and speculated there might have been mental health issues affecting his judgment.
“It’s a tragic event,” Edwards said. “There seemed to be something mentally wrong with him, which may have altered his thinking.”
Community Impact and Remembering McGill
Bobby McGill was remembered as a devoted Christian and loving family man. His granddaughter honored him in a Facebook post, emphasizing his faith and family love.
“My Papaw loved the Lord above all else,” she wrote. “He was a great man who lived by example.”
The tragic event has left the community in mourning. People are encouraged to keep McGill’s family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
