2 hours ago 0

Former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem greeted South Dakotans with a post on X for the pheasant hunting season. Her post included a photo of her in hunting gear, accompanied by a dog, which led to a wave of concerned reactions online. This post coincided with the news that Noem concluded her role as special envoy to the Shield of the Americas coalition. She shared a document noting that the position was designed as a six-month appointment. Noem still holds a position as a senior adviser in the State Department.

Following the news, Newsweek attempted to reach Noem’s representatives and the U.S. Department of State for comments.

Who Is Kristi Noem?

Kristi Noem previously served as governor of South Dakota from 2019 to 2025 before taking up the role of DHS secretary under President Donald Trump. She is recognized as an avid hunter and was once considered a potential running mate for Trump in 2024. However, the prospect diminished after excerpts from her memoir, ‘No Going Back,’ sparked backlash. In it, Noem recounted shooting her dog, Cricket, citing it as “untrainable,” which drew widespread criticism.

Earlier this year, Noem made headlines when The Daily Mail reported allegations of her husband, Bryon Noem, leading a double life. In response, Noem filed for divorce in September.

Kristi Noem’s Special Envoy Role Ends

Noem’s role as special envoy to the Shield of the Americas concluded recently. This position was part of a Trump administration initiative focused on counteracting drug trafficking and illegal migration. As special envoy, Noem collaborated with regional leaders on security initiatives, reporting to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.

Noem shared a screenshot of a State Department statement clarifying her transition from special envoy to senior adviser. The statement emphasized the role’s temporary nature.

Noem’s social media post on Saturday attracted significant attention. She wished South Dakotans luck for the hunting season, highlighting the tradition. In her post, Noem stands with Foster, her dog, which resulted in considerable concern for the dog’s safety given her past actions.

Noem initiated the Second Century Initiative as governor, aiming to convert marginal land into wildlife habitats to sustain hunting traditions.

Pheasant hunting in South Dakota runs from October 17 through January 31. Dogs are vital for locating and flushing out birds for hunters.

Explaining the Kristi Noem Dog Controversy

Noem’s memoir excerpts, published by The Guardian, detailed the incident where she shot her dog Cricket. The dog had allegedly attacked chickens and exhibited aggressive behavior toward Noem. She justified her actions by prioritizing her children’s safety over the dog. Noem later defended this decision in an interview, reinforcing her role as a protective parent.
