The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has disclosed the cause of death for 36-year-old actress Hayden Panettiere. She died due to the toxic effects of fentanyl and other substances. Her passing was declared a tragic accident, reports Fox News chief correspondent Jonathan Hunt from Los Angeles.
In her final moments, Panettiere was involved in a frantic 911 call. The brother of her boyfriend struggled to revive her after finding her unconscious in a South Carolina apartment on August 16. “Oh, God, oh, my God — you do like CPR or something?” Zach Hickerson asked the dispatcher, as documented in the audio obtained by ABC News and CBS News.
The call, lasting seven minutes, exposes Hickerson performing CPR on Panettiere with assistance from Brian Hickerson, who gave Narcan. Panettiere was unresponsive at the Greenville residence. Zach informed the 911 operator that he returned from church to find his brother and Panettiere inside.
The dispatcher sought confirmation on whether Panettiere was breathing. Zach responded, “No, I don’t think so.” The operator guided Zach through CPR instructions, urging him to lay Panettiere flat and begin compressions. Emergency crews rushed to the scene.
Zach continued CPR while Brian utilized Narcan, a medication reversing opioid overdose effects. Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.
The coroner’s report details her death as resulting from toxic effects of fentanyl, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. Ruled an accident, the report confirms the absence of trauma as contributing factors to her death.
The Greenville County Coroner and Greenville City Police initiated a parallel investigation. DEA assistance was enlisted in the case. Panettiere was temporarily staying at the residence when found unresponsive.
Her past struggles were documented in a memoir addressing postpartum depression. The actress had rekindled a relationship with Brian Hickerson, accompanying him to South Carolina the day before her death.
