During an autonomous warfare panel at the U.S. Army’s 2026 Annual Meeting and Exposition, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth faced multiple interruptions from anti-war protesters. The event took place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday. Within five minutes, protesters interrupted Hegseth four times.
One protester shouted, “Children in Gaza are starving! He is a war criminal!” while another accused, “You’re not a warrior, you’re a coward!” Hegseth responded to one such interruption with a remark, “She thinks highly of me.” Security escorted all six protesters from the venue following the disturbances, allowing Hegseth to continue his remarks.
The protests highlight ongoing discontent with U.S. military strategies in the Middle East. Criticism has been directed at the Trump administration’s stance on Israel and its actions in the Gaza conflict. Hegseth has been involved prominently in the expanded military operations against Iran initiated in 2026.
In a joint operation earlier this year, U.S. and Israeli forces conducted strikes against Iran. These actions aimed to dismantle perceived threats from Iran’s nuclear capabilities, missile programs, and military assets. Hegseth, alongside President Donald Trump, has justified these strikes as necessary for security.
