Joel Castillo’s Remarkable Return to Football After a Near-Fatal Accident

10 hours ago 0

Yorkville’s senior Joel Castillo experienced a life-altering car accident last March on Interstate 88. Amazingly, he not only survived but returned to the football field this fall. As a 5-foot-9, 167-pound wide receiver and kick returner, Castillo’s rapid recovery has been impressive.

Castillo described the accident: “I was coming home from a workout in Chicago and a tire crashed through my windshield.” He credited divine intervention for his survival and that of Lincoln Ijams, a friend and fellow passenger.

The other car was traveling in the fast lane towards Chicago while I was heading in the opposite direction. The tire came off out of nowhere. Both of us exited the car almost unscathed, although there was glass everywhere and some bleeding.

Castillo’s injuries were significant, with a lost front tooth, a broken jaw, and a severe concussion that impacted his studies and football training.

“I was sidelined for a couple of months,” Castillo recalled. “Neck, body, and back issues persisted.” Yet, Castillo bounced back and played a key role in Yorkville’s 21-7 win over Oswego East. His 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown at the start of the second half broke a first-half deadlock. He not only facilitated the team’s efforts with a 22-yard catch on a crucial fourth-and-13 but also made an 11-yard diving catch that drew a pass interference penalty.

“Coach told me to get to the sticks on the fourth-down play, and I executed,” Castillo said. He acknowledged his role and connection with quarterback Quintin Rink on the successful plays. “When the opposition manned up with someone over the top, it’s when my best game shows. Q delivered a beautiful pass.”

Coach Dan McGuire praised Castillo for his explosiveness and impact. “He deserves a ton of credit,” McGuire stated.

Castillo leads Yorkville with 29 receptions for 498 yards and three touchdowns. He’s also accumulated 375 yards on kick returns.

“Playing at the next level is my dream since I started football at six,” Castillo expressed. Despite setbacks in recruiting, he remains focused on finishing the season strong.

Following the accident, Ijams informed Castillo’s mother, Holly, about the incident. “It was the scariest phone call,” Holly Castillo said. “For them both to survive with minor injuries was incredible.” The aftermath of the accident affected college visit plans but Castillo remains determined.

Holly credited Coach McGuire for helping with academics. “Joel went from straight A’s to needing summer school. Coach ensured he completed his junior year.”

Reflecting on his training, Castillo said, “I live by the motto, ‘Train with the best to be the best.'” Despite the rocky path, Castillo expressed gratitude for playing this season.
