The New York Knicks celebrated their first NBA title in 53 years by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals last season. As champions, the Knicks now face new challenges in the 2026-27 NBA season.
Eastern Conference Rivalry: Philadelphia 76ers
NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins identifies the Philadelphia 76ers as the Knicks’ main threat in the Eastern Conference. The 76ers strengthened their team with significant additions during the offseason. They signed LeBron James, an all-time NBA superstar, and acquired Jaylen Brown in a major trade with the Boston Celtics. These players join a talented roster that includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe.
“The 76ers are the team to dethrone the Knicks,” said Perkins on ESPN’s NBA Today.
Last year, without James and Brown, the 76ers advanced to the playoffs’ second round, defeating the Celtics in the first round. The Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson, ultimately swept them in the second round.
Upcoming Season Opener
The 76ers and Knicks are set to kick off their regular-season campaigns against each other on October 20. This opening-day matchup will be closely watched as both teams aim to make strong starts.
