The New Orleans Saints have encountered a rough start to their season, much to the dissatisfaction of their principal owner, Gayle Benson. Benson expressed her concerns at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club luncheon following the team’s third consecutive loss.
“That is not acceptable to me,” Benson stated regarding the team’s standing. She acknowledged the frustration felt by fans, emphasizing that their commitment to the Saints warrants better performance.
The season had begun with high hopes, especially with quarterback Tyler Shough showing promise in his rookie year. Anticipation was high that the Saints could vie for the NFC South title and aim for playoffs under the guidance of head coach Kellen Moore. However, a close overtime defeat by the Detroit Lions marked the beginning of a challenging season. The Saints managed a win in Week 2 but faltered in the subsequent weeks, losing to the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and ultimately the Minnesota Vikings with a 23-13 score.
The owner’s speech during the luncheon, typically an unusual move during the season, was clear in her expectation for change. Benson rarely comments publicly during the season, usually maintaining a supportive stance, but recent events pushed her to openly challenge both Moore and general manager Mickey Loomis.
Benson outlined the responsibilities within the organization: Moore and his coaching staff must prepare the players adequately; Loomis and the football staff are accountable for creating a roster capable of success; the players are tasked with preparation and execution; while Benson holds herself responsible for enforcing accountability.
Mickey Loomis, a long-standing figure in the team’s operations, was reassured last year of his position, with Benson dismissing any notion of his dismissal as “ridiculous” and praising his work.
Benson’s commitment to improvement was evident in her insistence on making necessary decisions to uplift the team. She pointed to the embarrassing 45-24 loss to rivals Atlanta during the 20th anniversary of the post-Hurricane Katrina Superdome restoration as notably disappointing.
Benson resolutely stated that the Saints must exhibit genuine advancement in performance to regain fans’ confidence. “Words will not restore our fans’ confidence,” she asserted. “Our performance must do that.”
Looking ahead, the Saints face a pivotal two-game phase, beginning with an away game against the New York Giants followed by a landmark game in France against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
