Kelly Clarkson’s public disagreement with a Brooklyn shop owner has escalated beyond a simple misunderstanding, putting the shop’s safety at risk. Adam Rubin, co-owner of Art of Play, expressed concern on Tuesday that the singer’s celebrity status has intensified the backlash against his business after their disagreement about a $15,000 mechanical singing bird.
The item of contention, a mechanical bird named Molly, originally priced at $15,000, now sports a jaw-dropping $15 million price tag. Rubin, speaking to Fox News Digital, claimed the resulting online backlash has led to threats against him and his associates, along with exposure of their personal information.
“But I am afraid for the safety of our shop. Kelly Clarkson has put us in danger,” Rubin said.
Despite receiving support from local community members, Rubin emphasized that these individuals have faced attacks and intimidation. He accused Clarkson of abusing her influence, given her extensive reach and suggested that being a celebrity imposes a responsibility not to exert undue pressure on smaller entities.
The incident originated when Clarkson visited Art of Play and felt she was treated dismissively, akin to the treatment portrayed in the film “Pretty Woman.” After Clarkson posted about her experience, Art of Play responded, explaining that the bird in question was not for sale, but a similar model by artist Bliss Kolb was available.
Rubin defended the shop’s position, stating that Molly’s notoriety had increased due to the incident, and conveyed the reasoning behind the dramatic price change as a reflection of demand. Despite this, he reiterated that Molly remains a fixture in their store, not an item for sale.
The shop, noted for its assortment of intriguing items like puzzles, games, and spinning tops, aims to evoke a sense of childhood wonder in visitors. Rubin, a magician and children’s author, founded the store to nurture curiosity and delight.
Though the dispute has brought national attention to the shop, Rubin mentioned he would welcome Clarkson back if she chose to visit again. As the controversy continues to unfold, Clarkson’s representatives have remained quiet.
