Cold Case Solved: Ex-Detective Identified as 1960 Killer of 8-Year-Old Girl

3 hours ago 0

Advances in forensic technology have solved a decades-old mystery, linking a former Chicago homicide detective to the murder of an 8-year-old girl in 1960. Authorities are now reviewing additional cases for potential connections.

Case Background

Thomas F. McInerney Jr., who joined the Chicago Police Department in 1959, has been identified as the killer of Gloria Kowalewicz. Gloria disappeared on November 12, 1960, while walking to morning Mass at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, located a few blocks from her home. Her body was discovered in a ditch at a forest preserve southwest of Chicago, having been shot.

The murder spurred an extensive investigation, where police interviewed over 1,300 individuals and visited numerous homes, yet the case remained unsolved for decades.

Technological Breakthrough

Recent advances in DNA technology and a preserved fingerprint have led investigators to identify McInerney, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 70. Evidence from the crime scene, including Gloria’s belongings and a fingerprint from her purse, played a crucial role.

Working with the FBI and Illinois State Police, investigators matched the DNA and fingerprint to McInerney.

Implications

Chicago police acknowledged the tragedy of McInerney wearing the CPD star and evading justice during his lifetime. Now, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office is examining other cases potentially linked to him.

Although Gloria’s family passed away before learning the identity of her killer, authorities hope the resolution provides some peace to those who remember her.

McInerney later served with the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Nevada before retiring in 2004.
