Maryland’s Democratic Governor Wes Moore faces a challenging political landscape as he prepares to address a significant piece of legislation that affects the state’s cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Maryland General Assembly has recently passed a bill to end 287(g) agreements, which currently authorize certain Maryland jurisdictions to collaborate with federal immigration authorities within detention facilities to transfer individuals to ICE, as reported by Fox 45 Baltimore.
Despite being perceived as a moderate, Governor Moore has consistently advocated for a reduction in partisan politics and expressed support for law enforcement. This stance places him in a precarious position, balancing demands from his party’s progressive base, who lean towards rejecting ICE, and the views of moderates and independents who endorse ICE’s mission to deport criminal illegal immigrants.
Governor Moore has publicly criticized ICE operations in recent weeks, particularly as the Trump administration faces backlash over its immigration policies, especially after two Minnesota residents died during encounters with federal immigration authorities. Moore, while affirming that he is not pursuing a presidential run in 2028, acknowledges that many perceive him as having broader political aspirations.
Rhyan Lake, a spokesperson for Governor Moore, remarked to Fox News Digital about the governor’s significant concerns regarding ICE’s actions both within Maryland and across the nation under the Trump-Vance administration. Lake emphasized that the administration diverts attention from dealing with violent offenders, thus compromising public safety and creating disorder, which has made communities feel less secure. “The governor has made it clear: Maryland should not accommodate agents who are inadequately trained, unqualified, and unaccountable,” Lake stated. As with any legislative decision, Moore plans to thoroughly review the bill upon its arrival at his desk.
This debate extends beyond Maryland’s borders. Julian Epstein, a veteran Democratic strategist and former chief counsel for the House Judiciary Committee, shared his perspective with Fox News Digital, suggesting that the Democratic Party may be strategically erring by appeasing anti-ICE sentiments, which might be disadvantageous in general elections. Epstein described these sanctuary policies as propagating a secessionist ideology and criticized them as representing an open borders approach.
He cautioned that, in his opinion, Democrats may not fully realize that such open borders policies are a form of class warfare that disproportionately impacts the working class. Additionally, Epstein pointed to Minnesota’s violent street protests, denouncing them as not only illegal but also secessionist by nature. His message to Democrats is clear: “It’s time the Democrats woke up and smelled the coffee on this.”
