The Carolina Panthers and Kansas City Chiefs had a pause from action in Week 5, allowing them to observe as other teams made critical errors that led to losses or draws.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Panthers head coach Dave Canales discussed reviewing various game-management errors while his team took a break. “We can’t ignore those games. It’s a great chance during a bye week to watch RedZone and see as much as we can,” Canales stated. “I had to review instances since I received messages from coaches like, ‘Did you catch this management decision?’ These are examples we want to show our team to refocus our decision-making as a unit.”
Two significant coaching blunders occurred on Sunday. Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni made a poor choice in a special teams play. After kicker Jake Elliott secured a lead with a field goal, Philadelphia chose not to deliver the kickoff for a touchback. This error allowed Ameer Abdullah to return it 53 yards, setting up Cam Little for a decisive field goal. Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders mishandled the clock after causing a turnover against the Giants in overtime. With no timeouts, quarterback Jayden Daniels couldn’t spike the ball quickly, resulting in a 27-27 tie.
Both coaches faced criticism for their choices, a situation Panthers coach Canales intends to avoid. The Panthers entered Week 6 with a 2-2 record, maintaining the lead in the NFC South. This position follows Atlanta’s recent loss to Baltimore, putting the Falcons at 2-3. Carolina had previously defeated Atlanta and Detroit, suggesting they might lead the division. However, with the season still progressing, their upcoming game against Philadelphia will be a critical challenge.
