Russian Authorities Thwart Smuggling of Aletai Meteorite Fragment

2 months ago 0

The Russian Federal Customs Service has successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle a large meteorite fragment to Britain, under the guise of a garden ornament. According to the report released on Thursday, the artifact, weighing approximately 2.8 tons, is believed to originate from the Aletai meteorite, one of Earth’s most significant iron meteorites.

A criminal investigation has been initiated by prosecutors following the discovery of this strategically important cargo at the port of Saint Petersburg. The customs service stated in a statement that the cargo was identified during routine inspections of a sea container.

An image and accompanying video shared by Russia’s Federal Customs Service and the state-run TASS news agency captures an official examining the 2.8-ton meteorite piece. This discovery was made on February 5, 2026, as the fragment was poised to be illegally shipped to the United Kingdom.

Officials noted that the item had been falsely declared as a garden sculpture. However, thorough examination revealed a vast discrepancy between the declared information and the actual origin and value of the item. The meteorite fragment, with its grey and rugged surface, has an estimated worth of around 323 million rubles, equivalent to $4.2 million.

Details regarding the party attempting to export the fragment remain undisclosed; however, its destination was confirmed to be the United Kingdom. The meteorite’s intended sale has raised ethical concerns among scientists, who argue that such space rocks are vital for scientific research and can provide significant insights into the early solar system’s composition.

The Aletai meteorite was first discovered in western China in 1898 and is estimated to be over 4.5 billion years old. The exact timeline of its collision with Earth’s surface remains unknown, yet these celestial events occur sporadically throughout history. For instance, a similar meteorite landed in Georgia, USA, penetrating a house roof last year, witnessed as a spectacular daytime fireball by numerous individuals.
