Christa Pike has been discharged from a hospital and is back in prison after surviving an attempted execution. Her legal representatives confirmed her return to the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, where she has been held for over three decades.
In a statement from her attorneys, including Stephen Ferrell, Luke Ihnen, Randy Spivey, and Kelly Gleason, it’s noted that Pike expresses gratitude towards the first responders and medical staff for their assistance under extraordinary conditions.
“She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances,” stated her legal team. “She continues to receive medical care at the prison, and we will persist in monitoring her recovery.”
Pike, now 50, faced a lethal injection attempt on September 30 as Tennessee authorities intended to execute her for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. She survived two doses of pentobarbital, leading her attorneys to describe her physical recovery as “remarkable,” though they acknowledge potential long-term effects.
This incident raises questions about the methods used by states in carrying out executions, particularly concerning lethal injection.
