Vice President JD Vance recently referred to Senator Bernie Sanders’ earlier stance against open borders while defending the Trump administration’s latest immigration measures. Vance criticized self-proclaimed socialists for shifting away from what he views as a traditional emphasis on worker protection.
During a press conference announcing actions against companies alleged to exploit employment visa programs, Vance highlighted a rare agreement with Sanders. This comes as the administration suspends several firms from an employment-based immigration path and intensifies scrutiny on visa programs used by businesses and universities.
“It’s funny, back in 2016, one of the most interesting things that happened was when Bernie Sanders, then, of course, the leading socialist in the United States of America, was asked about open borders,” Vance told Newsweek. “He gave an answer that sounded similar to Stephen Miller’s, where he said, of course, we’re not going to have open borders because that’s going to displace American workers.”
Vance expressed that contemporary socialist politicians have diverged from the earlier focus on worker-centric immigration policies.
Vance’s remarks coincide with the Trump administration’s decision to suspend companies like Microsoft and Adobe from the PERM program. This program allows sponsors to seek permanent residency for foreign workers. Administration investigations uncovered Microsoft laying off 6,000 American workers while employing roughly 6,300 H-1B visa holders. Officials suggest some firms replaced domestic workers with less costly foreign labor.
Vance believes Sanders once shared concerns about labor competition due to immigration. He asserted that Sanders’ past stance on border security was aimed at shielding American workers’ wages and job prospects. Vance contrasted this with the views of contemporary socialist figures.
“It’s honestly, it’s a hard term to define these days,” Vance explained when discussing socialism. “Very often socialism, classically, you would think socialism is about prioritizing workers.”
Sanders, noted for his progressive politics, has consistently differentiated between advocating for immigration reform and endorsing open borders. During his campaigns, Sanders has argued for maintaining effective border and immigration systems while advocating for humanitarian and economic reforms.
Sanders has supported secure borders, legal status, and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. His stance favors enhanced technological and personnel measures at the border rather than relying solely on extensive wall constructions.
