The Birth of Arthur

Arthur Read, the beloved aardvark, captured hearts when he first appeared on television on October 7, 1996. Created by Marc Brown, Arthur initially lived in books. Brown’s inspiration struck when his son asked for a bedtime story about a unique animal. He chose an aardvark and penned Arthur’s Nose in 1976. Arthur’s design evolved over time to make the character more relatable and approachable.

Creating Arthur’s World

Brown’s tales of Arthur resonated with families, sparking a series of books that detailed the young aardvark’s adventures. As Arthur’s book popularity grew, television producer Carol Greenwald recognized their potential. She saw how television could inspire children to read. After discussions with GBH, Arthur transitioned to television despite Brown’s initial hesitations.

Arthur Debuts on Screen

Arthur’s TV debut on PBS Kids highlighted his story from Arthur’s Eyes, addressing themes of acceptance and belonging. Produced by GBH and Cinar, the series showcased a vibrant animal community.
