Chris Rock shared his thoughts on the allure and harsh truths of Los Angeles, especially for those chasing dreams. Appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” he discussed his new movie “Misty Green,” releasing on October 9. The film portrays an actress’s journey to Los Angeles in pursuit of her dreams, leading her to seek purpose after her career stalls.
Rock mentioned feeling a connection to the film’s story. He recalled finding Los Angeles beautiful upon his arrival, noting its darker sides. “And it’s still beautiful, but there’s homeless people everywhere. Like even on Rodeo Drive sometimes. It’s where people go to find their dreams, but so many dreams die,” he said. Los Angeles, according to Rock, is where everyone arrives with grand plans but where many people ultimately leave.
During his conversation with Fallon, Rock emphasized that Hollywood’s reality isn’t all about luxury. He said, “You get a job on television and people somehow think that money’s going to last you the rest of your life.” Pointing to the realities of his own financial experiences, he mentioned receiving residual checks from “Saturday Night Live” that amount to as little as nine cents.
Rock’s career began in New York City as a teenager in stand-up comedy. He gained national recognition through “SNL” from 1990 to 1993, and his 1996 comedy special “Bring the Pain” marked a significant turning point, garnering critical praise and an Emmy Award. Now a prominent figure in comedy, Rock has collected four Emmys and three Grammys. His work spans acting, writing, and directing, with “Misty Green” marking his latest return to filmmaking.
