Keurig Dr Pepper Introduces AltaRounds to Reduce Coffee Pod Waste

3 hours ago 0

Coffee-pod manufacturers aim to minimize waste generated by used pods. Keurig Dr Pepper has unveiled a new coffee brewing solution designed to address this issue. The innovation, known as AltaRounds, involves single-serve portions made from compressed coffee wrapped in a seaweed-based coating sourced from France. These capsule-shaped pucks are offered in boxes of eight, with most varieties priced at $1.37 each, aligning with traditional K-Cup costs.

Monique Oxender, the Chief Sustainability Officer of Keurig Dr Pepper, highlights the eco-friendly nature of AltaRounds by stating, “You can dispose of the AltaRounds any way you would normally dispose of your coffee grounds. They’re obviously great in compost, and that’s where we’d like to see them go. I put it on my garden. I put it on my house plants.”

Recycling Challenges

Efforts to recycle coffee pods persist but face hurdles. Many recycling facilities struggle with handling smaller plastic pieces. In 2024, the US Securities and Exchange Commission accused Keurig Dr Pepper of providing misleading information about the recyclability of their pods. This accusation arose after two significant recycling companies in the US stated they would not accept the packaging. Consequently, Keurig agreed to a $1.5 million civil penalty.

The single-use coffee packaging waste problem is escalating. According to Grand View Research, the coffee pods market, valued at $40.5 billion in 2024, is expected to grow to $58.2 billion by 2030. Earth911 reports that nearly 40,000 coffee pods are manufactured each minute, leading to over 20 billion pods being discarded globally every year.

Compostable Solutions and Limitations

Although several coffee companies have developed compostable packaging, questions linger regarding their complete decomposition ability. Infrastructural inadequacies exacerbate the issue. In 2024, a UK regulator barred two coffee companies from advertising their products as compostable because they could only degrade in industrial facilities, not at home. Limited industrial composting facilities exist in the US.

James Sternberg, sustainable packaging assistant professor at Clemson University, asserts, “The problem is really in the infrastructure and the economy of recycling and composting. That’s where the real challenge is.”

Home Composting Potential and New Machine Requirements

AltaRounds offer a home composting option, disintegrating within 12-16 weeks and fully biodegrading within six months. Yet, a new coffee machine purchase is necessary. The Keurig Alta, priced at $499.99, forms part of a bundle with four boxes of AltaRounds and glassware, a total retail value of $650. By contrast, the most popular traditional K-Cup brewer costs $219.99.

The introduction includes six coffee varieties: single-shot medium roast espresso, double-shot dark roast espresso, and dark, medium, light, and caramel-flavored coffee.

Protection and Future Prospects

Keurig Dr Pepper uses the alginate coating from Delica’s CoffeeB system, licensed technology from Switzerland. This coating ensures sustainability while maintaining puck freshness during transportation. Neha Mallik, Senior Director of Product Management at Keurig, affirmed, “We quickly realized we kind of need something to protect this and keep it together through shipping and distribution, so it comes to the consumer in one piece.”

Keurig Dr Pepper has not disclosed plans to discontinue the widely used K-Cup, which is compatible with the new Alta maker. Monique Oxender notes, “The consumer’s going to lead us on that. In order to transition a product, you’re going to have to get to scale and the consumer is going to guide us each step of the way here.”

In related news, Starbucks and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters reached an agreement to bring Starbucks coffee and Tazo tea pods to Keurig users, enhancing their presence in the single-cup coffee market.
