Botched Execution Leaves Tennessee Killer Christa Pike Hospitalized

1 hour ago 0

Convicted Tennessee murderer Christa Pike is currently in critical condition after two failed lethal injection attempts, according to her attorneys. These attempts followed her conviction for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. “Christa is alive right now,” said Randy Spivey, one of Pike’s lawyers, in a Zoom news briefing. However, he could not provide further updates on her health due to privacy considerations. She is in critical condition receiving lifesaving care. That is the extent that we have at the moment, he added.

Details of the Failed Execution

Tennessee inmate Christa Gail Pike was slated to be the first woman executed in the state in over two centuries after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted an emergency stay of execution. On Wednesday evening, she received two doses of lethal injection at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, but neither took effect. Witnesses reported Pike raised her head and questioned officials about sensations in her arm. She remained conscious and continued breathing.

Attorney Stephen Ferrell explained that the injections likely failed due to issues with the needle, which possibly dislodged or pierced through the veins. Due to health privacy rules, the team is unable to confirm specific medical details.

Pike’s Background and Crime

Pike, now 50 years old, orchestrated the brutal murder of Slemmer, perceived as a romantic rival, when she was 18. Her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, and friend Shadolla Peterson aided the assault. The murder involved torturing Slemmer for an hour before her death with a piece of asphalt used to crush her head.

Pike collected a piece of Slemmer’s skull as a trophy, displaying it at school. Shipp carved pentagrams into Slemmer’s chest and face.

Reaction and Review

The failed execution led Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee to pause remaining executions for the year. He initiated a thorough third-party evaluation to assess what transpired during the lethal injection process. This kind of thing should never happen again, emphasized Spivey.

Slemmer’s mother, who traveled from Florida to witness the execution, has not commented publicly. Fox News Digital attempted to reach her, without success.

Pike had expressed her concerns over the potential failure of lethal injection and requested alternate methods, which were declined. Her lawyers confirmed her request for an all-female execution team was honored.
