As the popularity of GLP-1 weight-loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy increases, concerns arise about rapid weight loss and significant caloric restriction potentially depriving the brain of essential energy and nutrients.
Effects of GLP-1 Drugs on Brain Energy
Dr. Tommy Wood, a pediatric and neuroscience professor at the University of Washington, emphasized that the impact of these drugs on the brain is linked to the body’s energy and nutrient levels during weight loss. Speaking at Strong NY, a major fitness and wellness event in New York City, Wood explained that the brain requires substantial energy.
Wood noted that brain reserve, which involves the brain’s physical structure and integrity, forms a bell-shaped curve concerning energy availability. Excessive energy from obesity, high blood sugar, and metabolic issues can harm the brain by damaging blood vessels and contributing to insulin resistance.
Risks of Energy Deficiency
GLP-1 medications may offer cognitive benefits by managing blood pressure and blood sugar. However, Wood warned about the dangers of low energy availability. Extreme caloric deficits may cause the brain to consume its own tissues for fuel.
“There was a study that examined marathon runners, revealing that the brain’s white matter shrank due to insufficient energy, but it recovered with rest and nutrition,” Wood shared.
Wood stressed that if people do not consume enough nutrients crucial to brain health, they risk brain size reduction.
Preserving Muscle Quality
Wood discussed concerns about losing lean muscle with GLP-1 drugs. Initially, “lean mass” loss might represent fat within muscles, so while muscles appear smaller, strength may not diminish. Instead, muscle quality and function might improve.
Nevertheless, significant risks emerge when people drastically cut food intake over time. Chronic undernutrition can deprive the nervous system of vital nutrients.
Safeguarding Brain Health
To protect brain health during weight loss, Wood advocates combining weight-loss programs with resistance training twice a week. This maintains muscle mass and stimulates brain growth factors.
Wood advised ensuring sufficient intake of essential “neuro-nutrients” like B vitamins (B12, folate, B6), vitamin D, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids to avoid long-term cognitive damage.
“It’s important not to overdo it. Ensure you get enough of the necessary nutrients for brain health,” Wood concluded.
