Washington — President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson will meet with AI industry leaders at the White House on Tuesday. The meeting is happening as lawmakers face growing calls to regulate rapidly advancing AI technology. Some warn it poses serious risks to humanity. Among the expected attendees is Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, according to a source familiar with his plans. Other attendees include OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Palantir CEO Alex Karp, confirmed by company spokespeople. Sources also indicate Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang plan to attend.
On Monday, House Speaker Mike Johnson said the discussion aims to find an appropriate balance between regulation and innovation. Interviewed by Fox Business, Johnson stated, “A balance is what we’re after. I think the conversation tomorrow will help us along that way.” He emphasized avoiding excessive government regulation that he believes could harm national security.
President Trump had a private dinner with Amodei on Sunday. The Anthropic leader has advocated for safeguards in the AI industry, although President Trump has opposed such measures. Ahead of the dinner, Trump mentioned that AI regulations would be part of their discussion.
Several of those attending Tuesday’s meeting were also present at a state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week. The event included other tech executives such as OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
Executives from AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI argue for setting limits on AI development speed to manage potential risks. However, others like Nvidia’s Huang believe the warnings are exaggerated. He argues that guardrails might harm the U.S.’s competitive edge over China in technology. President Trump has resisted slowing AI development, dismissing fears as a “hoax.” Recently, he announced plans to create a “federal AI force.”
Senate Majority Leader John Thune from South Dakota told reporters he would not attend the White House meeting but noted upcoming meetings with tech leaders at the Capitol. Later on Monday, Thune met with Amodei in Washington.
On the same day, many tech executives are expected to attend another Washington event to discuss AI and other topics. CBS News reported that President Trump will speak at the event, where he is also expected to launch a new federal online portal.
