Ukraine and Finland’s Response to Russian Aggression

At the United Nations General Assembly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned that Russia might extend its military actions beyond Ukraine. Meanwhile, Finnish President Alexander Stubb offered a more composed perspective, noting Finland’s readiness for any potential threat. Stubb credits former U.S. President Donald Trump with intensifying efforts towards a negotiated settlement for the war.

Stubb explained during an interview that Trump has been actively seeking peace, alongside negotiators like Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Stubb and the Prime Minister of Norway have been pivotal in relaying information between Ukraine, the United States, and European governments. They work silently, focusing on diplomacy behind the scenes.

Potential Russian Threats to Europe

In New York, Zelenskyy acknowledged that peace is Ukraine’s main goal. He expressed gratitude to Trump for sending envoys to Kyiv, following discussions in Moscow. Zelenskyy raised alarms about Russia targeting other European countries, highlighting risks such as drone incursions, missile attacks, and potential land operations against nations neighboring Russia or Belarus.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin might attempt to cause instability in Europe, aiming to weaken Western support for Kyiv. Zelenskyy urged European countries to respond decisively to Russian provocations.

Finland’s Prepared Approach

Stubb addressed concerns regarding possible Russian aggression towards Finland, which shares a long border with Russia. As Finland’s commander-in-chief, Stubb assured that there is no current factual basis for such fears. He emphasized that Finland remains calm due to its preparedness.

Stubb highlighted a distinction between the warfare occurring in Ukraine and Russia’s broader strategic campaign in Europe, employing tactics like cyberattacks and sabotage. He advised maintaining composure and ensuring readiness.

Finland’s defense capabilities are robust, with mandatory military service and a wartime military potential of 280,000 personnel, supplemented by reservists. Finland recently acquired 64 F-35A fighter jets to strengthen its air force.

International Relations and Finland’s NATO Membership

Finland joined NATO on April 4, 2023, enhancing its security posture against potential threats. Stubb believes this membership, alongside Finland’s defense measures, provides a strong deterrent against Russian aggression. He is confident that Russia is unlikely to challenge Finland directly.

During the UN session, Stubb advocated for sustained support for Ukraine, aligned with the principles of the U.N. Charter. He also addressed issues concerning Iran, agreeing with Trump on the necessity of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Stubb underscored the interconnected nature of global conflicts. He highlighted ties between Russia and Iran, noting exchange of intelligence and weaponry that have implications across geopolitical tensions.

The Finnish president remains dedicated to managing multiple international disputes and hopes for resolution in regions such as Gaza, Yemen, and Sudan.
