Thrift Store Wallet Reveals Hidden Treasure for Milwaukee Mom

A Milwaukee mother of seven experienced an unexpected windfall from an ordinary shopping trip. While thrift store shopping has gained popularity, with nearly 90% of North American consumers engaging with these stores in various ways, one encounter stood out. Reports indicate a notable rise from 83% in 2022. Shoppers overwhelmingly prefer in-person visits, with 77 cents of every dollar spent on pre-owned apparel happening in stores.

Bonnie Mata finds great value in thrift store shopping. At 41, she is raising 18-month-old twins and has already raised five adults. Mata was browsing a Milwaukee thrift shop when she picked up a snakeskin wallet. At first glance, nothing seemed unusual.

“I thought it was pretty cool,” she said. Despite initial hesitation, she decided to take it home. Her initial inspection didn’t reveal what lay hidden inside.

Days later, while considering posting the wallet on eBay, Mata inspected it again. This time, she discovered a hidden piece of paper.

“When I checked again, I found a 1985 hundred-dollar bill,” Mata recounted.

The year was special to Mata, as it marked her birth. Despite sentimental value, she used the cash, given her current situation with twins and lack of employment. “I’d love to keep it, but I can’t afford to,” she said, noting it was a memorable find.

Reyne Hirsch, a former owner of the Dallas Auction Gallery and antiques appraiser, has heard of many such thrift store surprises. Finding money in secondhand items is more common than many think.

“People have long hidden money in various items,” Hirsch explained, linking it to practices from the Depression Era. She suggested valuable items might end up donated during estate cleanouts when obvious valuables get more attention.

Hirsch also pointed out, when significant sums are not involved, finder often keeps the items. “Sometimes, even with a valuable watch or painting, no one realizes it’s missing,” she concluded.
