Trump Pressures Republicans on Filibuster Threat

President Donald Trump has intensified his efforts to persuade hesitant Republicans to eliminate the filibuster. He argues that failure to do so might result in his tenure as the last Republican president. Trump’s administration has faced challenges due to the filibuster obstructing significant aspects of his agenda, including the SAVE America Act.

Trump warns that Democrats will remove the filibuster if they regain control, pushing their priorities through quickly. He cautions that without action, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico may become states, likely electing Democrats to Congress. This scenario could hinder future Republicans from winning the presidency.

If Senate Republicans don’t TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, the Democrats will, leaving me as the last Republican President despite the Party’s success,” Trump stated on Truth Social.

He elaborated that admitting Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. as states would add more Democratic representation—four Senators, eight Representatives—and bolster electoral demographics in favor of Democrats. Such changes could compromise Republican prospects in future elections, calling it “THE END OF AMERICA” if not addressed.

Currently, voters in D.C. have electoral representation due to the 23rd Amendment, participating in presidential primaries and general elections with a Democratic tilt. Puerto Rican voters engage in primaries but lack federal election rights. Legislation aimed at granting statehood to both regions was pushed by Democrats in 2023.

The filibuster, a 60-vote requirement in the Senate for most legislation, necessitates bipartisan cooperation. It has impeded several Republican initiatives, notably Trump’s SAVE America Act.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has consistently argued against eliminating the filibuster, citing insufficient GOP support to do so. During Trump’s tenure, Republicans firmly resisted such changes.

Thune recently reinforced his stance on a podcast, expressing concern over potential Democratic moves to add statehood, federalize elections, or alter the Supreme Court if the filibuster was removed. “We’re not going to hand them the keys,” he stated.
