The State Department informed Congress that 17,500 refugee spots for fiscal year 2027 will be allocated, primarily for Afrikaners. Fiscal year 2027 begins in October.
The Trump administration has limited the U.S. refugee resettlement program for many global refugees but allows thousands of Afrikaners, portraying them as victims of racial oppression in post-apartheid South Africa.
The South African government denies persecuting Afrikaners, descendants of European settlers. The State Department argues Afrikaners face agricultural land seizures without compensation and policies undermining employment equality.
They also cite violent rhetoric fueling disproportionate violence against these minorities. A group of Afrikaners resettled in May 2025 at Washington Dulles International Airport, Virginia.
Recently, the U.S. imposed sanctions on South African officials accused of discrimination. The resettlement effort may cost the U.S. government $500 million.
The U.S. expects Afrikaners to assimilate, preserving resources for citizens. Other countries are not anticipated to resettle Afrikaners.
President Trump claimed Afrikaners face a “genocide” in South Africa, confronting President Cyril Ramaphosa on this issue. A “60 Minutes” report argued farm murders are part of a broader crime problem affecting all races.
