Michigan Senate Candidate Abdul El-Sayed Faces Criticism Over Comments

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed faced online criticism following his remarks during a town hall event at Western Michigan University. The event, titled “Students vs. Billionaires,” included a tense moment when a student questioned El-Sayed about his stance on abortion. El-Sayed is known for supporting the codification of Roe v. Wade and funding for Planned Parenthood.

El-Sayed responded to the student’s question by stating, “I respect your position insofar as it’s founded in the idea that you want to protect and empower life. The question we have to ask ourselves is, what’s the best way to do that? And whose life gets destroyed in that process?” He elaborated that government restrictions on reproductive care risk reducing a woman, or “sometimes even a juvenile human,” to a mere “carrying vehicle for a fetus that has not ever breathed air.”

El-Sayed’s comments drew criticism on social media, with conservative figures accusing him of dehumanizing language. The Republican National Committee’s RNC Research pointed out El-Sayed’s avoidance of the word “woman” when discussing pregnancy. Mark Levin Show producer Rich Sementa added, “He won’t even say WOMAN. The baby hasn’t ‘breathed air’ so it’s just cargo.”

Critics like Rich Lowry from the National Review labeled El-Sayed’s language as evasive, while others compared his comment style to a “word salad.” Former GOP gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon accused El-Sayed of attempting to alter perceptions of motherhood.

El-Sayed, who describes himself as a capitalist despite rejecting the socialist label, will contest the Senate seat against Republican nominee Mike Rogers. The seat is currently held by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. As the November race approaches, El-Sayed’s positions on abortion rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and gender-affirming care for minors continue to garner significant attention.
