Political Influence over NIH Grantmaking Concerns

The Trump administration is considering changes to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) grantmaking process. Dissatisfaction with current fund distribution has sparked discussions about adding political influence.

The Washington Post reported a contentious Oval Office meeting where senior administration staff debated NIH’s funding decisions. Some argue that the research does not align with President Trump’s priorities. The New York Times revealed plans for an executive order to create a committee with veto power over awards.

OMB Director Russell Vought has been critical, accusing NIH of supporting “woke” initiatives. However, Jay Bhattacharya, NIH Director, defended the grantmaking process.

Emily Hilliard, HHS senior press secretary, stated, “HHS remains focused on NIH’s core mission of supporting rigorous biomedical research that improves the health of the American people. We will continue to prioritize Gold Standard Science, transparency, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.”

Sens. Susan Collins and Patty Murray of the Senate Appropriations Committee criticized the White House’s reported moves. Collins stated, “The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) should not be involved in agency decisions on the awards of grants,” while Murray emphasized that NIH funding belongs to “patients and families waiting on the next medical breakthrough.”

In other healthcare news, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker shared his weight loss journey, attributing success to a GLP-1 drug. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans a study on drinking water quality for traces of abortion pills, a request long pushed by anti-abortion groups.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee will review nominations for key healthcare positions, including Surgeon General and FDA Commissioner, in their upcoming meeting.
