Anthropic CEO Warns of AI Race Between US and China

On Sunday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei compared the AI competition between the U.S. and China to the Cold War with the Soviet Union. He highlighted the need for both countries to manage the potential threat of AI technology spiraling out of control. Speaking to ‘CBS Sunday Morning,’ Amodei reiterated his concerns about AI exceeding human control capabilities. He called for a slowdown in AI development but acknowledged the dilemma this poses when competing with China.

Amodei suggested initiating discussions with China as a solution, similar to past negotiations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. ‘It’s not in any government’s interest to have bioterrorism,’ he stated. He advocated for collaborating with China to establish limits on AI development speed. Amodei emphasized considering disarmament talks concerning AI, drawing parallels to nuclear negotiations during the Cold War era. ‘If we look at what AI models can do, they have significant geopolitical and national security implications,’ he explained.

Critics have expressed concerns over China’s potential leadership in the AI arms race. Amodei’s essay received support from industry figures like SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. However, not all tech experts shared his views. David Sacks, a former White House AI advisor, disagreed with Amodei’s warnings, suggesting they aim to instigate a government takeover of AI. Daniel Kokotajlo, a former OpenAI researcher, expressed doubt that voluntary industry measures could suffice to maintain control over AI systems.

Anthropic has not commented on the ongoing debate regarding AI’s future implications. Critics fear AI’s power accumulation poses a risk, as noted by Kokotajlo, who warned that AI might eventually stop adhering to human instructions. Concerns about AI dominating crucial sectors and potentially sidelining human roles fuel the ongoing dialogue surrounding AI development strategies.
