Stefon Diggs’ Penalty Costs Commanders in Tight Contest Against Eagles

Veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs incurred a 15-yard penalty for the Washington Commanders during their Week 1 face-off against the Philadelphia Eagles. The penalty followed Diggs’ touchdown in the fourth quarter, catching a pass from quarterback Jayden Daniels.

After scoring, Diggs ran through the back of the end zone and leapt onto the goal post, attracting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The penalty moved the Commanders out of optimal two-point conversion position.

Head coach Dan Quinn revealed that the team had planned to go for a two-point conversion before the penalty altered strategy. Consequently, Washington opted to kick an extra point, reducing Philadelphia’s lead to 17-16.

Despite the adjustment, Philadelphia emerged victorious with a 24-22 final score.

Reflecting on his action, Diggs commented in the locker room, “As soon as I wrapped my arms around it, I was like, ‘Oh, I forgot.’ I’ve played for a long time; you used to be able to do that. I’ve got to be better.”

In his debut for the Commanders, Diggs completed four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.

As the season progresses, Washington aims to rebound in their upcoming Week 2 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
