Macklemore Removed from Ed Sheeran’s Tour After Controversy

Macklemore, known for his hit song “Thrift Shop,” faced backlash during Ed Sheeran’s U.S. stadium tour. His pro-Palestinian speeches and performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey prompted several venues to refuse hosting him. Consequently, Macklemore was removed from the tour.

Controversial Performances

During his opening acts for Sheeran on September 4 and 5 at MetLife Stadium, Macklemore wore a keffiyeh and displayed footage of destruction in Gaza. He performed “Hind’s Hall” and led “Free Palestine” chants. The song features lyrics accusing Israel of genocide.

Reaction from Venue Owners

Robert Kraft, New England Patriots owner, barred Macklemore from performing at Gillette Stadium due to what he described as a history of anti-Semitic rhetoric. Kraft emphasized that the stadium aims to provide an environment free from hate speech. Macklemore’s recent actions, according to Kraft, were deemed offensive to the Jewish community.

As a result, promoter Messina Touring Group confirmed Macklemore’s removal from all remaining U.S. tour dates. This included eight NFL stadiums still on the schedule.

Past Controversies

Macklemore has previously faced criticism. In May 2014, he performed in Seattle wearing a costume condemned for resembling anti-Jewish caricatures. Macklemore attributed the costume to coincidence, yet it reignited controversy with the release of “Hind’s Hall.” Critics argue Macklemore targets Israel while ignoring Hamas’s actions, especially the attacks on October 7, 2023.

Kraft’s Position

Robert Kraft, founder of the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism, stated that the decision wasn’t about diminishing the suffering of Palestinians. Instead, he believed advocacy should not obscure Hamas’s responsibility. Kraft expressed a desire to discuss the issue with Macklemore, seeking peace for all and an end to hate.

Macklemore’s Response

On social media, Macklemore accused venue operators and Kraft of facilitating his removal. He defended his actions, denying that his comments constituted hate speech. Despite losing his tour spot, Macklemore considered it a price he was willing to pay.
