Mold Discovery Delays Home Makeover for Hampshire Homeowner

Sophie Collins, a 29-year-old from Hampshire in the United Kingdom, eagerly purchased an apartment intending to renovate it according to her unique style. She viewed the space as a ‘completely blank canvas,’ perfect for bringing her colorful, maximalist style to life.

‘I loved the property for its architecture and structure,’ Collins shared. ‘I had so many ideas for transforming it into my dream home.’

However, shortly after moving in and initiating renovations in late April, Collins began feeling unwell. She assumed her symptoms—extreme fatigue, chronic cough, headaches, sinus pressure, and a stuffy nose—were due to exhaustion from her dual schedule of working and redecorating.

Exposure to moldy environments can cause symptoms such as a stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing, burning eyes, or skin rash, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Collins had previously read about mold exposure and suspected it might be the cause, yet initially saw only minor mold by the windows and blinds. Concerned about hidden mold, which may have been painted over, she called in mold specialists.

The specialists confirmed her suspicions: high moisture and humidity levels in the apartment provided an ideal environment for mold growth. Collins felt relief, knowing her symptoms were legitimate and treatment was necessary. Following the mold treatment, her health concerns subsided.

Though her symptoms improved, her redecorating plans encountered delays. She now must wait a year from the treatment date to resume painting or wallpapering to ensure the mold treatment remains effective.

‘I’ve only managed to decorate the entryway, hallway, and part of the living room,’ she mentioned. ‘The next project is the bedroom.’

Collins shared her ordeal on TikTok on August 25, announcing she could resume decorating ‘287 days from today.’ She expressed anticipation for fully expressing herself through interior design once the anti-mold treatment warranty expires.

In the meantime, Collins continues to make her apartment feel like home with furniture and smaller projects, while planning the next phases of her dream home makeover.
