Trial Begins for Suspects in Murder of Surfers in Mexico

Three men accused of murdering two Australian surfers and an American face trial after two years of investigations. The trial commenced on Monday, following the killings in April 2024 during what is believed to have been an attempted robbery.

Victims and Incident Details

The victims were Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, aged 30 and 33, and their 30-year-old American friend Jack Carter Rhoad. They were on a surfing trip along Mexico’s Pacific coast. Authorities reported their deaths occurred during an attempt to steal their pickup truck, which was found burned near their bodies.

They had been camping at a secluded beachfront site when they were attacked. Several days later, their bodies were recovered from a shaft atop a cliff, bearing gunshot wounds to their heads.

The Robinson brothers’ parents attended the start of the trial in Ensenada. Debra Robinson, the mother, expressed deep emotions upon confronting the accused in the courtroom. Her partner, Martin Robinson, emphasized, “We want to find out what happened. We want to find out why.”

The surfers were initially reported missing on April 27, 2024. Prosecutors claim that the attackers surprised and murdered them with firearms on April 28. Their bodies were eventually located on May 3, 2024.

Three witnesses testified, including the stepson of one defendant, describing his stepfather as violent. Testifying anonymously, he recounted his presence at the crime scene, where he heard a “commotion.” He also mentioned being intimidated into silence with threats from the accused.

Ary Gisell Silva, identified as the perpetrator’s girlfriend, received a 20-year sentence for her role. She admitted to inciting the robbery to steal the pickup’s tires, as the tourists had notable valuables.
