Reshaping the Capital

President Donald Trump’s initiatives to redefine Washington, D.C. involve several construction and renovation efforts, expanding from the White House grounds to the National Mall. The projects aim to leave a lasting impression on the nation’s capital.

White House Ballroom and East Wing Complex

The most costly project is the new White House ballroom and East Wing complex. It will replace the historic East Wing, demolished last year. Spanning 90,000 square feet, the ballroom should be ready by summer 2028. Trump asserted the cost would be below $400 million, funded entirely by himself and private donors. However, The Washington Post reported the total cost at $600 million, with more than half from taxpayer funds through various federal entities. The Supreme Court allowed project continuation amid ongoing lawsuits.

“We are living in the Golden Age of America, and this Building will be one of the Greatest ever constructed in Washington, D.C.,” Trump commented on Truth Social.

Kennedy Center Renovation

Trump advocated for extensive renovations at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The building stretches over 15 million square feet. The Trump-aligned board aims to append his name to the building’s facade and close it for two years for renovations. Congress allocated $257 million for repairs. However, plans faced legal hurdles, including a U.S. District Judge’s order against renaming the center illegally.

The board later sought to rename it as “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.” Attorneys argue Trump’s involvement might attract up to $500 million in donations.

Triumphal Arch

Among Trump’s ambitious projects is a 250-foot-tall Triumphal Arch, planned between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Official cost estimates are absent, but Axios indicated a potential $100 million expense. The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, composed of Trump appointees, has preliminarily approved the design.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced the start of excavation work, proclaiming the arch as a significant piece of American architecture honoring Arlington Cemetery.

Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

The renovation of the 2,000-foot-long Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has experienced setbacks. Initially estimated at $1.5 million, costs soared above $16 million due to issues like peeling sealant and algae resurgence. Despite charges against David Hearn for alleged vandalism, they were dismissed as the damage resulted from improper installation. Efforts to address algae issues include a $2.7 million contract with a Massachusetts company.

East Potomac Golf Links

Trump’s plans to update the century-old East Potomac Golf Links aim to transform it into a premier golfing destination. No cost estimates are public, yet the administration claims private contributions will cover expenses. Lawmakers seek clarity on the use of taxpayer funds. Legal actions challenge the project’s impact under federal environmental and preservation laws.
