Gas Prices Hit Record Highs Nationwide Amid Economic Concerns

Gas prices are expected to reach unprecedented levels across the United States this Labor Day. The only exception is Indiana, as U.S. drivers face continued price hikes tied to recent geopolitical events.

According to GasBuddy, the national average gas price might hit $4.03 per gallon this Labor Day weekend. This figure marks an 87-cent increase from last year and represents the highest recorded price for this holiday.

“It’s been a challenging year for motorists, with constant ups and downs at the pump,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

The national average gas price was $4.144 per gallon as of Thursday. This is a rise from $4.100 the previous week, $4.095 a month ago, and $3.190 a year earlier, according to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA).

California leads with the highest average at $5.782 per gallon. Hawaii and Washington also have prices above the $5 mark. Conversely, Indiana reported the lowest average, with prices at $3.448 per gallon.

Current Economic Impact

Gas prices have surged due to geopolitical disruptions affecting global oil supply. This rise began after the start of the conflict in Iran, exacerbating economic pressures in the United States. The initial price mark was established at $2.98 per gallon before tensions escalated.

Comparison of Labor Day Prices Over the Years

Last year, the national average was $3.19 per gallon, nearly a dollar less than the current figures. In the previous years, prices on Labor Day were $3.29 (2024), $3.77 (2023), and $3.79 (2022).

Under Joe Biden’s administration, gas prices have become a critical issue. When he took office, the average was $2.4 per gallon. It escalated to over $3 by the end of 2021, with peaks in 2022 reaching $5.06 per gallon, primarily due to events like the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Historical Context During Different Administrations

During Trump’s first term (2017-2021), gas prices were relatively low. The pandemic in 2020 led to a sharp decline in demand, further decreasing prices.

Gas prices averaged $2.48 per gallon under Trump, which he later used to critique Biden’s administration’s handling of fuel costs. Amid his 2024 campaign, Trump pledged to reduce gas prices below $2, although prices have stayed above $3 due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
