U.S. Sailors Visit Pattaya After Lengthy Deployment

Videos and images on social media show U.S. sailors arriving in Pattaya, Thailand’s ‘Sin City,’ after spending 286 days at sea. Their arrival follows a record deployment aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, during which concerns about food shortages and mental health arose. President Donald Trump dismissed these concerns.

The USS Abraham Lincoln, deployed in November 2025, played a role in the U.S. naval blockade and combat operations in the Iran war. It reached Chon Buri province early Wednesday for a five-day rest. Other vessels such as the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. and USS Robert Smalls also docked in nearby areas.

Pattaya officials met with U.S. Navy representatives to establish behavioral guidelines. Despite Pattaya’s reputation for sex tourism, it has been trying to rebrand as a family-friendly destination. The USS Lincoln’s commanding officer warned sailors against using prostitutes, an offense under Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Violations could lead to severe penalties.

Welcome banners and billboards greeted U.S. personnel, and many began exploring Pattaya, visiting the popular Walking Street. Buses and chartered vehicles brought more servicemen from Laem Chabang, where the Lincoln is docked. Social media showed sailors exploring neighborhoods, prompting comments on their style and demeanor.

Videos on TikTok and Instagram depicted sailors dancing in nightclubs or relaxing by pools, earning sympathy and support from viewers. The presence of around 5,000 personnel reportedly boosted Pattaya’s economy positively. However, local police responded to an emergency call involving two American service members in a minor incident outside a bar. They were returned to the aircraft carrier per U.S. Navy officials.

The military connection between Pattaya and the U.S. dates back to the Vietnam War era. Up to 50,000 U.S. personnel were stationed in Thailand, near the Sattahip naval base and the U-Tapao airfield, which hosted U.S. Air Force B-52 bombers.
